According to KSH, in May this year, the number of guests increased by 7.1 percent overall, and the number of guest nights increased by 3.8 percent in tourist accommodations. 72 percent of guest nights were provided by commercial accommodations, with traffic increasing 1.7 percent. 9.6 percent more guest nights were recorded in private and other accommodations compared to May 2022.

The number of domestic guests decreased by 3.1% and the number of guest nights decreased by 4.1% compared to the same month in the previous year. The number of guests reached 721 thousand, and the number of guest nights reached 1.6 million in the tourist accommodation. Within this, 523,000 inmates and 1.1 million guests are registered in commercial accommodations. Of the latter, 68 percent was spent in hotels, with guest nights down 5.4 percent from a year earlier. The number of domestic guest nights spent in private and other accommodations increased by 2.1% compared to May 2022.

In the two most popular tourist regions, Lake Balaton and the Central Danube region, 22 and 19 percent of domestic guest nights were recorded, respectively.

The report also reveals that in the month of May, the number of foreign guests increased by 23 percent and the number of guest nights increased by 13 percent compared to the same month in the previous year. Of the 573,000 guests who arrived at tourist accommodations, they spent nearly 1.6 million guest nights, of which 431,000 guests and 1.1 million were checked-in at commercial accommodations. Of the latter, 78 percent was spent in hotels, where guest nights were 11 percent higher than a year earlier.

The number of nights of foreign guests spent in private and other accommodations increased by 19% compared to May 2022. The most popular tourist region was Budapest – the Middle Danube region, where 64 percent of the nights of foreign guests were recorded.

A total of 22,533 tourist accommodations, including 2,614 commercial and 19,919 private and other accommodations, welcomed guests.

Among commercial accommodation, 954 hotels and 1,079 boarding homes were partially or fully opened in May, KSH announced.

Gross revenue from commercial accommodation totaled nearly 49 billion HUF, which at current prices was 31 percent higher than the previous year. With the Széchenyi Pihenőcard, cardholders paid 3.2 billion HUF, 38 percent more than the current rate at business accommodation.

In January-May 2023, compared to the same period in the previous year:

  • 2.0 percent more, a total of 12 million guest nights were recorded in tourist accommodations.
  • Domestic guests spent 7.3 percent less, and foreigners 13 percent more (5.9 and 6.1 million) guest nights in tourist accommodations.
