A cheese factory in the northern part of Spain, belonging to the autonomous community of Asturias, sold the cheese they made for a huge sum, so much so that it won the title of the most expensive slice of cheese in the world.
The record-breaking dairy product was made at home and was voted the best Cabrales cheese in a local competition, beating 14 competitors.
The most expensive cheese in the world
In the last week of August every year, the municipality of Las Arenas de Cabrales organizes a competition where the best player is chosen.abrales Pieces of cheese are put up for auction. This year, the Spanish restaurant El Llagar de Colloto paid a staggering 30,000 euros for a single piece of cheese, which is equivalent to more than 11 million Hungarian forints.
This cheese is made from a mixture of cow and goat milk and is preserved for several months in a cave in the mountains of Los Picos de Europa. The Los Puertos factory in Poo de Cabrales knew they “had good cheese,” but they never thought this restaurant would pay a record amount for a 2.2-kilo block of cheese.
