Index – Tech-Science – Backpack cameras flood Budapest

Although it took many years for an updated version of Apple Maps, it arrived in Hungary this spring, which already has new and more existing roads and, last but not least, looks much better – thanks to the fact that even the smallest settlements of a few hundred people have 3D stereoscopic appearance. In addition, the main sights of the country – such as the Parliament or the Gellért Spa – also received detailed models; However, that’s not all.

With the spring update, Apple’s self-developed Google Street View mirroring feature became available in Hungary, which was called Look Around in the Cupertino company’s app. The new feature can already be used in Apple Maps, but it’s currently only available mostly in places accessible by car — but not for much longer. Apple has announced that it will soon begin mapping the Hungarian capital on foot.

The Apple Maps team will be taking Budapest under their belt in July 2023. Our backpacks contain equipment that helps us create the best digital map of Hungary. Of course, data protection remains our top priority

– Reads what Apple has published recently in a Twitter post.

As they wrote, pedestrian surveys allow the services provided by Apple Maps to be developed, mainly by mapping places that cannot be reached by vehicles; And while Budapest’s skyline can’t necessarily compare to the narrow streets of Lisbon, there are plenty of places in the Hungarian capital where Apple’s new software will come in handy.

The company’s employees will be roaming the streets of Budapest until July 21, so if you’re in the capital until then, you can easily run into them — but don’t worry they can find your face in Apple Maps, they’ll be hidden with the company’s license plates. It is interesting that the American company also participated when they took pictures with their cars in other regions of the country, you can see them below:

  • Budapest: April 24, 2023 – May 16, 2023
  • The Great Southern Plain: April 24, 2023 May 19, 2023
  • Southern Transdanubia: April 24, 2023. May 17, 2023
  • Great Northern Plain: April 26, 2023 May 25, 2023

They don’t get bored with Google either

As previously reported by Index, Google Maps also brought innovations to Hungary in June, a feature called Immersive View became available here too, so you can see Parliament, Vajdahunyad Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion or even Mátyás-Széchenyi Church, Chain Bridge and St. Stephen’s Basilica.

The immersive view is created thanks to artificial intelligence and machine learning; Google says it analyzed billions of Street View and aerial imagery to create the service, which initially rolled out in cities like Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose, Tokyo and Venice — joined by Budapest at the start of the month.

You can download Google Maps for free on Android and iOS devices, but the Apple Maps app is only available on the company’s own devices, such as iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.
