In response to a journalist’s question, Noemi Nibesi said that she believes the reason for the change is that she was asked to do what she did in 2019, which is Budapest History Museum (BTM), practically failed as a result of the internal opposition group and its political and journalistic connections.
According to the outgoing director, who was appointed under Mayor Istvan Tarlos, although the institution has not been able to renew itself either in its internal office structure or in its work, it is a professionally thriving institution to this day. The reform was necessary because the 140-year-old museum has been operating in its current organizational form for 4 to 5 decades.
– Few people know that BTM has member institutions. Its headquarters and one of its member institutions are located in the Budavari Palace, the other member institution is the Kiselj Museum, the third is the Aquincum Museum, and the fourth is the Budapest Gallery in Lajos Utca. They all operate as small scientific workshops, but this is still a national museum, and this is also stipulated in legislation.
There are certain structures and internal operating mechanisms that have to be “centralized” – and that was the damned word throughout the story – so that there is no equivalent in the organization. I wanted to get rid of these things – Noemi Nibesi said on the podcast.
The museum director said that the leaders of the two member institutions, Kisili and Aquinkume, viewed these reform efforts – quite incorrectly – as an attempt to limit their independence. In return, he said, member institutions enjoy complete independence in their professional fields.
– I did not want this institution to be visible in the capital, and I wanted to achieve it in such a way that the areas of service, public relations, museum education, communications, shops and marketing were linked to a central organizational unit, regardless of that. Colleagues working there will remain in member institutions, but there must be a common connection, a common direction, which will help the Budapest History Museum become better known in the city. Unfortunately, that was the mistake, he said bitterly.
He explained that the member institution does not have its own budget, but rather BTM has a central budget, which is provided by the capital municipality.
It was not that I took money from member institutions and it could have been left in a vacuum. We just wanted to rationalize public procurement and purchasing, because it doesn’t make sense for a Kisili Museum employee to go to a DIY store and buy three light bulbs. This is not the case in an institution with three hundred people and a budget of three and a half billion. This must be fixed, and this is indisputable.
When the capital got new leadership in 2019, the director of the Kisili Museum contacted the mayor and informed him of his desire to take over the management of BTM, the director said.
– At that time, there was a very broad social coalition, as a result of which the Metropolitan Assembly did not ultimately put an alternative to me on the agenda, but rather created a vacuum around me in the last four years. At any level, the capital had no priority on the reforms that were beginning to advance. Noemi Nibesi, whose appointment will run until March 31 next spring, said the goal was rather to sharpen, sharpen and amplify personal conflicts.
As of April 1, 2024, he will be replaced by 71-year-old historian Laszlo Csorba, who also has a history as a museum director, having been director of the Hungarian National Museum between 2010 and 2016.
