Netflix UK, the Writers Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) and the Personal Managers Association (PMA), which represents agents in the UK, have signed a deal that was unveiled on Tuesday. They said this covers “the bonus to be applied to UK writers on live-action series commissioned to write Netflix scripts”.
The deal is effective from February 1, 2024 and is “the first agreement between the streaming service, WGGB and the PMA,” they said.
“Local writers are key to Netflix's success in the UK, and we're thrilled to have reached an agreement,” said Anne Mensah, Vice President of UK Content at Netflix.
Eli Beers, General Secretary of WGGB, added: “For the first time in the UK, writers working for a global broadcaster will have their rights set out in a collective union agreement and enjoy improved terms and conditions. We are delighted to have reached this agreement with Netflix.”
“We are delighted to finally agree a pioneering deal with terms for writers in the UK that moves away from granting rights in perpetuity and introduces an ongoing payments structure,” the PMA said.
The Writers Guild on Tuesday also posted a summary of the key terms of the Netflix agreement in the “Prices and Agreements” section of its website, adding: “WGGB members will soon be able to view the full agreement by logging into the members area of our website.”
Among the details mentioned are things like a minimum script fee of £17,000 ($21,700) for a one-off 60-minute show and £15,000 ($19,200) for a series. The initial script fee includes Netflix's right to exploit the work worldwide for six months, along with non-theatrical and promotional rights.
