Images that look suspiciously doctored or AI-generated can be seen in a relatively recent true crime documentary on Netflix, True Crime Documentary What did Jennifer Pan do? In the series.
The film's intriguing imagery, which dissects the 2010 murders in Canada, is used to illustrate the girl protagonist “Bubbly, happy, confident and very honest.” His personality is as described by his high school friend.
The images, which appear approximately 28 minutes into the film, bear all the hallmarks of AI-generated images: from distorted hands and fingers, to distorted facial features, to objects with uncertain outlines in the background and impossibly long front teeth.
Using generative AI to describe a real person in a true crime documentary, designed to show reality, raises real questions. These questions have been sent to Netflix by several media outlets, but have not yet received an answer from the streaming giant.
