North Korea’s Defense Ministry on Monday accused US forces of violating North Korean airspace by US aircraft. A spokesman for the communist country’s defense ministry assured the official North Korean news agency that the “American provocation” would only bring the Korean peninsula closer to nuclear conflict. Added:
Pyongyang will “retreat”, but the planes that violate its airspace will be shot down.
Kim Gojong said that US planes had been spotted eight times in the area, then stated that US forces can “expect heavy overflights if they do not stop the illegal flights”. Kim Gojong, who also holds an important position in the Workers’ Party of Korea, called on South Korea to “stay out of the topic” because it “only concerns the Korean People’s Army and the Americans.”
On Monday, the US Department of Defense denied Pyongyang’s allegations, which Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said were baseless. Singh also highlighted:
Washington abides by international law.
At the same time, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller called on Pyongyang to stop its actions aimed at inflaming tensions and return to the negotiating table.
