With the participation of representatives of the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition From June 20 to 21, talks were held at the level of Russian, Turkish, Syrian and Iranian deputy foreign ministers in the Kazakh capital, Astana. On Tuesday, the two sides discussed the timetable for restoring relations between Syria and Turkey.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday, they wrote:
We agreed to hold the twenty-first international meeting on Syria in the second half of 2023.
At the same time, Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Kanat Tomis announced that the meeting of the “Astana formula”, which just ended, is the last.
Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian President’s Special Envoy for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister, confirmed to the Russian news agency TASZ that the decision to end the Syrian meetings in Astana came at the initiative of the Kazakh side. As pointed out The location of the new meetings on Syria has not yet been determined.
The parties involved in the current discussions also recalled the agreement that was approved at the tripartite summit on July 19, 2022, according to which a summit will be held in Russia.
