The Klein House is reopening, but it will be different than what we are used to

The country’s best wines, especially Szerémség wines, can be tasted and purchased at the reopened Klein House in Subotica on Corvin Mátyás utca. The Klein House now operates as a wine bar and wine shop, aiming to promote local wine and wine culture and develop wine tourism. There is no place like this in Subotica, and owner Zsolt Gyulai says that from now on at Klein House wine plays the main role. Those expecting the old Klein will likely be disappointed.

Zsolt Gyulai, face and owner of Klein House

– In 2015, when the Klein House opened, my idea was to mix wine culture and general culture. After all, wine is a drink of friendship, it brings people together. However, there were so many cultural events: We had 250 in the four years that the wine part of the story was left out. We closed our doors in 2018 and although we were already looking at the possibility of reopening in 2019, and there were a few summer parties that summer, in the end this grand house didn’t live up to what we imagined it would be. However, since then, the desire to do something related to wine has not disappeared. I always went in with my eyes open, and if the opportunity had arisen, I would have entered sooner. He just came. And since it has always been my dream to pursue some kind of wine activity, we strived to achieve it.

You mentioned that this will not be the Klein it used to be. What will you like?

There is a separate shelf for natural and organic wines

Anyone expecting old Klein will be disappointed. This wouldn’t be Klein’s, as the venue is out of place and now the focus will be on wine. This is Klein’s home that was left behind. Presentation of wine culture, wine regions, natural wines and wines from Szeremség. That is the goal now. In Budapest, I held a lot of Szeremség wine tastings, and I see that people don’t even know about it, even though it is one of the most important historical Hungarian wine regions. We also want to include wine tourism in this room.

What types of wine can be found on the shelves of Klein House?

– We would like to promote natural wines, especially from Tarcal, but there will also be Serbian wines, as there are many serious wine regions that rival Italian or French wine regions. We have something to show the world, and most tourists do not want to drink industrial beer, but local wine. I am expecting serious cooperation with pridronovino.rs (webstore and wine magazine selling natural, live and organic wines – editor’s note), I mainly drink natural wines myself. We also encourage the hybrid varieties produced at the Institute in Karlóc: Probus, Sila and Neoplanta.

What the visitor can taste on the site, you know, there will also be content …

– Guests can sample twenty-two wines on site, and can also choose from the racks to take away. There will be all kinds of beer, coffee, tea and natural juices. During the summer there will also be concerts, and programs are planned and organized together with the beer bar next door. In addition, there will be themed wine tasting sessions twice a month.
