Developer Skunkape Games has announced that Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered, the third installment in the Telltale series, is in the works.
Skunkape Games has announced Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered, an updated version of the third installment in the Sam and Max series from Telltale Games. Twelve years have passed since the original release.
Sam and Max began life as characters created by Steve Purcell in his youth, and later made their first appearance in a 1987 comic book series. The pair of self-ruling anthropomorphic private investigators later became the main characters in the 1993 LucasArts classic point and click adventure game Sam and Max Hit the Road, which is considered one of the best games in the series. Thanks to the fame they gained from Hit the Road, they were given an animated series from 1997 to 1998, The Adventures of Sam and Max: Freelance Police. Almost ten years later, Telltale Games released the spin-off game Sam and Max Save the World. Save the World has received positive reviews early in Telltale Games’ history.
Telltale Games later produced two more seasons of Sam and Max, and appeared in episodes of The Devil’s Playhouse during 2010. Skunkape Games is composed of former developers of the series, whose name refers to a character from Devil’s Playhouse, “General Skun-ka’pe”. Skunkape Games has since remastered the first two seasons of Sam and Max, and now they’ve announced that a third season will arrive in 2023.
While the trailer doesn’t show much, it does a lot to re-render some of the key locations and show them in a much cleaner way with the current generation’s light. The trailer also doesn’t announce which platforms the title will be available on, but considering that the previous two versions of the Transformers were also available on PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox. Presumably, The Devil’s Playhouse will also be available on the same platforms. We hope Skunkape Games will confirm where the game can be played soon.
With ten years passing between the original release of The Devil’s Playhouse and Sam and Max: Save the World Remastered, it’s nice to see “the favorite thing of dogs and bunnies” getting this attention again. The success of Return To Monkey Island and Pentiment helped make 2022 a great year for adventure game fans, and The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered will fit in nicely with today’s gaming world. Perhaps the title will be successful enough to warrant an entirely new outing for Sam and Max in the future, though fans for now will likely be happy to see a remastered season of the classic.
