This provision may come into force from 2025.

The European Commission has adopted a proposal to completely ban the use of dental amalgam, which currently still contains 40 tons of mercury annually in the European Union.

A proposal to ban the use of dental amalgam may enter into force from 2025. The proposal must also be approved by the European Parliament and the Council.

In addition to the use of amalgam, the European Commission will ban the production and distribution of other mercury-containing products, such as lamps.

The EU justification also describes that exposure to high levels of mercury can damage the brain, lungs, kidneys, and immune system.
