Lots of people have been kicked out by German restaurants

Including part-time work, the first 10 months of 2021 saw 11.6 percent fewer jobs in the gastronomic sectors than in the same period last year. The biggest drop was in February. Compared to the same period in 2019, the year not affected by the epidemic decreased by 23.4 percent.

  • The number of people working in bars and pubs decreased the most in the past year, by 23.6 percent from 2020 and by 44.7 percent from 2019.
  • The number of employees in catering services decreased by 11.3% compared to the previous year and by 22.5% compared to the pre-crisis period.
  • Employment in catering services decreased to say the least: by 8.3 percent compared to the previous year and by 17.1 percent compared to the pre-crisis period.

The impact of layoffs on low-income groups more than others. In the whole of 2020, the German gastronomic sector employed 1.07 million people, 9.1 percent less than in 2019. Within this, the number of workers employed in low-wage categories fell by 15.5 percent to 381,000.

The number of apprentices in the sector fell by about a fifth in 2020 compared to the previous year, while the economy as a whole fell by about a tenth.
