Hockey: NHL record-holding coach certified by Hydro Fehérvár AV19

One of the biggest names in the club’s history was confirmed to the bench by Hydro White Castle AV19 when he signed American Kevin Constantine for a 2+1 year deal.

Only his compatriot, Ted Sator, was a caliber who earned two NHL playoffs a total of three times and served in the world’s top hockey tournament for 13 years before spending two years at Székesfehérvár towards the end of his career, and also two Hungary’s national team captain.

As a player, Constantine did not make a lasting impression, although he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens as a 9/154 in 1978, but was only invited to a play test in 1980, where he did not qualify. After that, he didn’t play anymore, but first tried as a carpenter, bartender, and car dealer in civilian life, then traded his goalkeeper stuff for coaches and got into the National Hockey League for a decade.

From there he later signed for a short stint in France, longer in Switzerland, then switched in the Far East, jumping last season to Poland in November.

“Before I got a contract in France, I talked to a lot of people from both the profession and civil society about whether I should step up. In hockey, everyone said God forbid. So I did it and traveled all over Switzerland, the Far East and Poland, all of which I loved because I love learning about cultures, how societies are alike and different.” Konstantin, who already had indirect contact with Hungarian hockey in many places and times, only now makes sense.

For example, when his former player, Canadian Tyler Dietrich, worked as a youth coach at White Castle in the first half of 2010, Constantine, through whom he arrived, was already in talks with the club’s leadership at that time. In Switzerland, at Embry-Biotta, the second coach was the Canadian-Italian Diego Scandela, who was part of the Hungarian men’s team at the time of our promotion in 2008 and 2015, and the Swiss men’s team was led by Canadian-British Sean Simpson, our Fed captain. Szélig met Viktor, the general manager of Fehérvár, when Constantine coached Angers in 2010 and Szélig was still playing for Briancon.

Now, however, he can follow Fehérvár, arriving on the one hand without family so that his youngest son can finish his school, and on the other posing with him the legendary question about goalkeepers which is: “How many people have spent decades of their lives shooting at him?!”
