Hungary’s women’s 3×3 basketball team suffered a 14-17 defeat against the Czech Republic, who are now 3/3 in the group, on Thursday’s match day of the World Championships in Vienna.
After a day’s rest, the national team took to the field in front of the Vienna City Hall knowing that they had to win at least one of their two remaining group matches in order to advance, and against the Czech team that had come from the qualifiers. It looked easier than last year’s World Cup silver medalist against Canada.
At the same time, the fact that the Czech Republic surprisingly won both of Tuesday’s matches against Canada and Mongolia and expected to continue as group leader runs counter to the paper format.
Thursday’s game produced a few baskets, and the Hungarians were leading almost all the time, the opponent, previously at 100 percent, led for the first time with two minutes left, after which the Hungarian team again gained the advantage. A minute later, but a little later with a long shot in the last half of the 15th minute, both teams turned to him with a Czech lead -14.
The Czech was better in the women’s 3×3 basketball event
In the exciting final match, the Hungarian national team had a great chance, which had ten seconds left, but Vivian Burundi missed both penalties, so the national team could not convert in the end.
With victory over Mongolia on Tuesday, Hungary, who lost to the United States, are in the top five after three games with one win and two losses, and are closing out the group stage against last year’s World Cup silver medalist Canada.
The group winners advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams play a play-off to advance. In the case of both genders, the podium finishers from the World Championships advance to the Paris Olympic Qualifiers.
