The US space agency is delaying the planned landing of astronauts until at least 2025.

“The agency considers it a priority to return to the Moon as quickly and safely as possible,” Administrator Bill Nelson said at a press conference on Tuesday, adding that NASA’s Artemis program “is likely to bring people to the Moon for the first time in .2025 at the earliest.”

According to the original plans, in 2024, an American astronaut was supposed to reach the moon for the first time under the program. This was announced by the Trump administration in 2019.

Since the program’s budget was much higher than planned, observers have long expressed doubts that NASA will be able to maintain its original goal.

Disagreements also delayed the planned departure. In April, NASA commissioned Elon Musk’s space company, SpaceX, to develop the first commercial lunar lander, which, however, was challenged in court by space company Jeff Bezos. In a ruling issued Friday, a federal court dismissed the lawsuit. NASA has announced that it will continue to work with SpaceX.

Under the Artemis program, four astronauts will be transported into orbit by the Orion spacecraft, with two astronauts arriving at the celestial body with a SpaceX lander.

So far, only the United States has sent people to the Moon, with 12 American astronauts landing on the celestial body between 1969 and 1972 as part of the Apollo missions.
