Katalin Nowak: The role of the Pacific region is increasing, which is why good relations with Papua New Guinea are important

Katalin Nowak: The role of the Pacific region is increasing, which is why good relations with Papua New Guinea are important

President Katalin Novak, who arrived on Wednesday on a state visit to the independent nation of Papua New Guinea, stressed that the role of the Pacific region is increasing in value, which is why a good relationship with Papua New Guinea is important.

The President of the Republic has offered fifty talented students from Papua New Guinea scholarships for higher education in Hungary.

Katalin Novak recalled that this is the first time that a Hungarian president has visited Papua New Guinea, and that diplomatic relations between the two countries were established nearly 40 years ago.

Papua New Guinea and Hungary are Christian countries, which also provides a basis for good relations between the two countries, Katalin Novak said, adding that the visit is an opportunity to remember a brave Hungarian Christian woman, missionary Maria Molnar, who for about 100 years has been active here.

In memory of Maria Molnar, the bell donated by the Hungarian Reformed Church was opened and blessed on Thursday.

Katalin Novak said in the program held in his honor that Hungary will be the next president of the Council of the European Union in the second half of next year. This would further deepen Papua New Guinea’s relationship with Hungary and the European Union.

He also said that Hungary never had colonies, “we have learned that we have to respect others”, and that there is always something we can learn from others.

“We Hungarians are a respected nation,” he declared, and that the relationship between Papua New Guinea and Hungary must also be based on this mutual respect.

Katalin Novak stressed that the people, culture, history and geographical situation of Papua New Guinea and Hungary are very different, “and yet, we have a common Christianity.”

The President of the Republic discussed strengthening economic relations and protecting the environment with Ewi Suroi, who is acting as the country’s Governor-General, and will hold a meeting with the Prime Minister on Friday.

The Hungarian head of state visited Papua New Guinea for the first time, and the region has rarely been visited by senior Hungarian leaders – as Ambassador Zsolt Kissinger Szalan pointed out to the public media. He stressed that Oceania, the archipelago and Australia are becoming more valuable in the current geopolitical situation, and large quantities of raw materials can be found in the region, all of which represents an opportunity for Hungarian companies and investors.

He said that the Hungarian President’s higher education scholarship program could lay the foundation for the presence of Hungarian companies in the region in the future. Students who study in Hungary and return to their home country bring with them their existing network of contacts.

The ambassador announced that the President of the Republic was received on an official visit with the highest military honors, and a dinner party was held in his honor in the House of Representatives.

“We have come 13,000 kilometers to commemorate a wonderful reformed Hungarian woman,” Bishop Zoltan Balogh told public media on Thursday. Hundreds and thousands of people think about Maria Molnar, who visited this island 100 years ago and converted people to Christianity.

The bell was donated by the Hungarian Reformed Church to serve on the island to invite the community to worship, the bishop said, adding that the church replaced a bell that was thrown from the heights by Hungarians in 1937, but was taken away by Hungarian forces. Cyclone.
