On November 23, 2022, Israel demolished an elementary school built by the Palestinian community in southern Hebron, on the grounds that the military had declared it Firing Zone 918. Teams removed and confiscated tables and chairs from classrooms. The demolition was ordered by Supreme Court Justice Yitzhak Amit.

The donation-funded school was completed about three weeks ago. Three teachers taught 23 students who were in grades 1-4. class and descended from the Safi al-Fawqa, al-Sifai al-Tahta, and Mughair al-Abd communities. According to the plans, the school would have been expanded up to the ninth grade in the future. Until its establishment, children used to attend school in Khirbet al-Fakhit, but that has become impossible, as soldiers have been harassing children and teachers continuously in recent months. A number of them were arrested at checkpoints and their cars were confiscated. The aim of the new school was for the children to be able to study without hindrance.

Israel also issued a demolition order for the Khirbet al-Fakhit school and the schools in the nearby settlements of Khirbet Janbeh, Khirbet al-Majaz and Khallet al-Daba’, where 44 teachers teach 172 children.

In early May 2022, the Israeli Supreme Court rejected a petition by Palestinians living in Area 918, which had been declared a firing zone, allowing the state to expel them. Since then, Israel has taken measures familiar to the Palestinian resistance: making the lives of the residents so unbearable that they were forced to leave their homes.

About a month ago, B’Tselem requested the urgent intervention of the International Criminal Court in The Hague to force Israel to change its policies in the region and allow the population to flourish on a daily basis.
