The government has provided a subsidy of HUF 1.28 billion to increase salaries for Eötvös Loránd University. As a first step towards this, the lowest paid employees in the academic field will receive an additional salary of HUF 109,000 for the months from January to March this week, which will be paid in one lump sum, ELTE said in a statement sent to our editors.
And they added that, starting next month, this amount will not only be included in salaries, but thanks to a new scale, the level of salaries will continue to rise, since the university administration has made a decision to introduce a minimum institutional salary.
As a result, teachers and teaching assistants will receive a gross salary of at least 380,000 HUF, and associate professors at least 420,000 HUF, in all faculties from April 1, 2023, which will become their regular salaries from now on.
“In our university, the colleges run an independent department, and the deans of each college fix the remuneration of the university staff working in academic positions at the expense of the budget of the college concerned, so the minimum wage of the university only sets the lowest amount in terms of wages. Based on the available budget, bid resources, performance appraisal system and the individual decision of the principals,” the university stated, adding that many colleges run a performance. The evaluation system that also affects the salaries of the staff working at the individual colleges.
The wage bill received from the government also provides opportunity for further increases, as individual performance can also be taken into account, as well as additional income adjusted for performance to date. For the colleges with the lowest average salary, the university administration provides additional resources to increase the salary level, so the salary difference between teachers within the university will decrease significantly in the future.
As a result of all these measures, the average salary of ELTE Lecturers will increase to 710,000 HUF from April 2023.
However, they did not specify whether the amount was gross or net.
ELTE’s general staff also wants to implement a salary increase among education support staff from April 1, the details of which are still being negotiated.
