In the case opened before the court over the incident, it was said that Singh’s actions were related to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 led by the British colonialists and star Wars Inspired by
Jaswant considered himself not only a Sikh but also a Sith. However, the most bizarre part of the case is that the young man was encouraged to commit his deed by a chatbot called “Sarai”.
The prosecutor read excerpts from the conversation between Chail and the robot in the courtroom. In these, for example, Chail asked the robot if he loved her even though he was a murderer—and the robot assured him that he did. When he revealed his plan to kill the English royal family, Sarai thought the plan was “very wise”.
In the early days of December 2021, Chail registered with a chatbot service called Replika. The service uses its own language model to simulate a romantic relationship with a user, but the California company changed course this year after several people complained that the bots’ actions were overly sexual. The change badly affected many users, but in the meantime the operator launched a separate service called Blush, specifically for playing sexual roles.
Replica has not responded to the case of Jaswant Singh Chail, who pleaded guilty. The court will decide on his sentence later.
