Forza Motorsport 8, which got rid of its numbering by following stupid directions, will have the right machine learning AI.
Chris Isaki, Creative Director of Forza Motorsport, provided a deeper look at the racing game’s revamped AI during a recent monthly broadcast. There are two sides to the system. One manages how the machine’s cars brake, accelerate, and turn, and the other is responsible for the correct curve on the track. Turn 10 has revised both disciplines, keeping in mind the principles of clean and competitive racing. For this reason, the studio has revisited the Drivatar principle. In the past, this mimicked how competitors on our friends list competed in their previous competitions, but this way also insecure competitors “sneaked in,” until we got a crash derby instead of a competition.
In Forza Motorsport, user behavior is not shown, only paint and vehicle customization, as well as clothing, are shown, courtesy of Drivatar. For the AI, Turn 10 used machine learning to teach the tech using all combinations (car, tuning, track, weather conditions) without cheating (if you get too far away from them, they suddenly catch up faster, and vice versa — that’s the rubber band). In Forza Motorsport 7, the developers added three racing brackets to the game, but here there are nineteen for each combination.
By comparison, in the video, Forzas’ AI is unleashed on a Maple Valley track. In the new part, the machine was thirteen seconds faster, and there will be no typos here, but honest ones can creep in here and there. Esaki even demonstrated the rubber model, which we’ve heard is forty-eight times more accurate, but what’s new is that the old physics were able to cause wild behavior (“spikes”) in the suspension, and the new system will result in better, more precise handling.
Forza Motorsport will be released on October 10th for Xbox and PC. It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass from launch.
