The Presidential Office announced on Monday that the Croatian president proposes to convene the National Security Council to appoint a prosecutor, MTI reported.
According to the statement, the exceptional and unexpected situation in the Croatian justice system has had a negative impact, and may continue to have a negative impact on the coordinated action and stability of the state administration, as well as on the national security of Croatia.
In Croatia, the Prosecutor General is appointed by Parliament by absolute majority on the proposal of the Government for a period of four years based on the initial position of the relevant parliamentary committee.
The committee heard the four candidates on January 17, and the government nominated Supreme Criminal Court Judge Ivan Torodić to fill the position, and Parliament will vote on his appointment on Wednesday.
According to the Head of State, Torodić is not politically independent, is immoral, and does not have the professional reputation necessary to perform the duties of a prosecutor.
“On the contrary, he is the only judge in Croatia who has openly and clearly declared his affiliation and loyalty to the ruling party, the Croatian Democratic Society, which casts doubt on his independence and therefore on the independence of the Croatian Prosecutor,” the DOH confirmed.
This judge should have been removed from the judiciary because of his ties to criminal circles, and not nominated to head an institution whose priority is combating corruption and crime.
The president said earlier.
The opposition parties also agree with the President of the Republic, who has given the government until Tuesday to withdraw Torodić's candidacy, otherwise it will turn to the European Commission to investigate whether such an undesirable person could become the chief prosecutor of an EU member state.
Ivan Torodić acted in well-known cases such as the trial of former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader or former Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polanček. At the same time, he maintained a close relationship with people like Zoran Mamic, the technical director of the football team Dinamo Zagreb, who embezzled millions and was sentenced to prison, and Josipa Rimac, the former State Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration. Who has been under investigation for several months in connection with a corruption case related to the construction of a wind farm near the town of Knin in northern Dalmatia, has been sentenced to prison.
