The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered by chance in 1947 by a Bedouin cattle herder from Qumran near Jerusalem. This discovery has opened a window into the past for archaeologists, and for religious scholars important evidence of the creation of the Bible. Excavations eventually uncovered about 850 documents, including portions of the Old Testament written on parchment and papyrus, dating back to the 2nd century BC.

One roll stands out from the rest. Written in coded language on a thin sheet of copper, this scroll contains what many experts believe to be a treasure map that provides detailed directions to where the astonishing wealth of gold and silver is hidden. The copper scroll was discovered in 1952 in Qumran Cave 3. Analysis showed that the scroll consisted of an alloy of copper with a small amount of tin. The researchers initially thought they were two separate scrolls, but after cutting them apart to examine them, they realized that the thin metal had broken and split two centuries earlier.

The scroll is written almost entirely in Mishnaic Hebrew, although it contains several entries in Greek. The Copper Scroll is non-religious and contains words and phrases not found in other ancient texts, making accurate translation difficult and leaving the door open to wide interpretation.

Scholars have identified 63 separate entries on the copper scroll describing the location of an estimated 160 tons of hidden gold and silver. However, the translations are vague and indefinite. One entry describes a treasure that can be found “in the gutter at the bottom of the tank.” Another entry refers to 65 gold bars found “in the hollow of the old tribute house, on the chain platform.” Historians do not recognize these reference points and do not know where to begin their treasure hunt.
Some of the Dead Sea Scrolls, including the Copper Scroll, have been displayed in the United States. It can be found at the San Diego Museum of Natural History, so those who are curious about the map drawn on the metal sheets and want to decipher a treasure map that has not been found by archaeologists, scientists and treasure hunters will find it at the museum.
