The Gruber Josef Water Reservoir is located in the belly of the Gellert Hill, where water rises 8 meters high in two piano-shaped basins over an area of 10,000 square metres, between 212 columns. This is the largest water storage basin in Budapest, specifically located under the area bounded by Hegyale Utca, Sanc Utca, and Orum Utca. It is such a surreal and unusual sight that many people are amazed by it.

The Gilerthegy Water Reservoir dates back to 1902, when its construction began, and it became operational in 1903. The water reservoir was expanded between 1974 and 1980, with plans drawn up by Joseph Gruber, whose name the reservoir still bears today. The reservoir was also needed due to water shortages in the country in the 1950s. Even in the summer of the 1980s, there were often water restrictions and irrigation bans, and even the upper floors of multi-storey buildings had no water at all.
