14 national teams are already known for the 16-team Olympic Qualifying Tournament for women’s basketball in February, in which the Hungarians will also take part. According to information from the trade magazine wbasket.hu, this year’s African Championship ended with a victory for Nigeria, thus concluding the continental championships for this year.
There will be 12 teams in the women’s basketball tournament at the Paris Games. As a director, France is a participant in the subject, as is the United States, the world champion. These two nations will also be present in the 16-team qualifiers, but they will already be on the field as designated Olympians.
From Europe, in addition to France, the five-ring host, the top five at the European Championships in Slovenia in June, that is, Belgium, Spain, fourth Hungary, Serbia and Germany, can prepare for the qualifiers. From the Asian region – which includes Australia – the top four in the Asian Championship can participate in the February Army Review, ie China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. From Africa, the finalists of the African Championship, as well as Nigeria and Senegal, will be eliminated.
The French had no chance in the bronze medal game, and the Hungarian women’s basketball team finished in fourth place at the European Championships.
The Hungarians finished fourth in the continental championship for the fourth time after 1954, 1974 and 1997.
The list of US-only participants is not final. The winner of the Brazilian American Championship will participate in the qualifiers next February. In addition, four teams, Canada, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Venezuela, compete in the Olympic Qualifiers in November, with two groups qualifying for the Qualifiers in February, with teams competing in four quads. Collections will be withdrawn in the fall.
