Netflix's New 'Sandman' Show Gets Better Ratings Than 'Sandman'

Netflix's New 'Sandman' Show Gets Better Ratings Than 'Sandman'

Renewing the pricey Sandman series for a second season on Netflix has been a bit wobbly, but they've managed to do it in the end. Not only that, but Sandman's spin-off Dead Boy Detectives has also been greenlit and is now live on the service.

Interestingly enough, Dead Boy Detectives managed to get a better review than the original Sandman series itself. After its debut, it received a score of 92%. Rotten tomatoes from critics, and 84% from the audience. This is compared to Sandman 88% and 80%. You do not like violently Better, but better anyway, and I'm sure those behind the show are very happy with the results.

Dead Boy Detectives follows two ghosts who work with a clairvoyant girl to solve supernatural mysteries. They were actually created by Neil Gaiman of Sandman fame (and Matt Wagner) who first appeared in the 25th issue of the comic. She makes infrequent appearances throughout the series, and it seems like the show may have to stretch a little beyond the confines of the comics in a number of ways.

Dead Boy Detectives is not being announced as a limited series, so it could get a second season if it does well enough. It has so far taken third place on the Netflix charts after its debut, which isn't exactly amazing, because you generally want to hit number one at some point for added reassurance, but I also have to believe the show is a lot less expensive than Sandman ( Although not without its frequent use of visual effects).

Each episode is its own case, which makes the show a little more procedural than many Netflix shows, though there are some connecting threads woven throughout the entire season. I didn't make it to the end, so I'm not sure if it will have a cliffhanger ending, but if it does, it would certainly kick off a second season rather than joining the graveyard of unfinished Netflix series.

It's a good show, it reviews well, it just needs to perform to Netflix's ever-changing standards, which are often too high to go back to, and I think we'll see how it plays out in the long run.
