Testing: BMW i4 eDrive 40

BMW i4

The BMW i4’s first two exits were disappointing. On the one hand, of course, because it’s nice to be inside, but what’s even more worrying is that the front door slams like an IFA door. The unusually heavy element hits the body with a metallic explosion even after a normal sequence of movements.

Inside, however, the arrangement is perfect. The quality of the passenger compartment assembly is impeccable and the materials are good from one to the other. The only reason I dare say it’s not excellent is because the bigger driver, ie E-Drive 50 It was also tested in Vezess, in which, for example, the window lifter buttons were not ordinary black, but metallic gray. Therefore, it is higher inside the house as well, but the absolute premium atmosphere permeates the interior.

The metal parts are beautiful, the leather cover is smooth, the keys work smoothly, and the ergonomics are first-class. The buttons for the most important functions are immediately available. The volume has a fixed dial, the air conditioning function has moved to the menu, but the temperature control is always on top. The switches for systems related to driving dynamics are lined up around the gearbox, etc.

The driver’s seat has hard padding, sporty side support, but can’t be lowered too low

At first, I was surprised by the seating position, as the seat can’t be lowered as deeply as I’m used to from a BMW sedan or coupe. Not so much that it doesn’t have a low enough position that I can’t see the hood. It’s like sitting in an SUV, and that feeling reverberates while driving, but more on that later.

In the first row, the seats are very sporty, with massive lateral support and extendable thigh support to support the body of the driver and passenger, especially the strong padding. The steering wheel is almost vertical, its size and grip are excellent, and it immediately tempts you to drive. Find a comfortable position, but I do not think about sportsmanship.

Although the rear doors are very small, they can open ninety degrees, so you can easily sit in the back. Behind the driver’s seat that was adjusted for me (178 cm), I get enough space so that there is 6-8 cm of space in front of my knees, and 4-5 cm of space above my head. However, there is a trick to this, because our hips are very low, so our legs are closer and our knees are higher, which means our thighs are not supported. Plus, if the driver’s seat is at the lowest point, our feet can’t get under the seat.

The entrance is a bit narrow, but the space is big enough for adults with a few tricks

All this means that adults can also get in good shape, but this class provides perfect rest for children. There’s also separate climate control at the rear – not just the grille – but there are also two USB ports, two cup holders and a reading light, and heated seats in the back can also be ordered. There is only one USB port on the front, but there is also a wireless charger.

It is a little strange to me that the screen was just placed above the dashboard, that is, it is not part of the interior. Its atmosphere is as if a flat screen TV is placed on top of one of the chests of drawers in an elegantly furnished apartment. It is out of sight. But if we consider that the rest of the interior was similar to previous BMWs, and the screen is a true novelty, it is already understandable why it should be so stunning.

The screen itself is top-notch, the dashboard is 12.3 inches in a single curved panel, and the integrated systems screen is 14.9 inches. The new generation BMW iDrive display and operating system debuted in this model. The turntable is still there, but of course the screen is touch-sensitive and the voice control is more advanced as well.

Excellent ergonomics and quality materials characterize the passenger compartment of the BMW i4

The dashboard graphics are just like the hamster teeth on the front of the car. I think BMW will be liked by most. It doesn’t bother me, I don’t usually belong to the majority, but I can’t do anything with the dashboard graphics either. I always had to decipher what he was showing, and it wasn’t enough to look at. Fortunately, they put a high speed indicator in the middle.

The hardware behind the screens and the software that runs on them are excellent. Both screens display a picture perfect and rich in detail, and the 360-degree cameras’ image is sharp as well. The menu responds quickly and writes meaningful Hungarian scripts. It is mainly based on large menus, but the setup is different. It’s a big question how long does it take a driver to learn a list with a lot of symbols, and even learn how long it will take to drive blindly looking for something.

Apple Carplay and Android Auto run wirelessly, so the internal system is expanded with the functionality of our phone. The basis of the integrated navigation system is cloud-based, and can also be designed to take into account the vehicle’s charging options.
