Romanian universities have been left out of the world rankings

Not a single Romanian university is included this year in the international rankings compiled by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy every year since 2003 of the world’s best higher education institutions.

Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca was among the top thousand universities in 2017, and in 2018 and 2019 the University of Bucharest was also included among the top thousand educational institutions. At the same time, the University of Cluj was on the ranking list between 2020 and 2022.

Based on Adevărul’s report, unlike Romania, every other Central and Eastern European country is represented by at least one university in the 2023 ranking. Poland ranks in the top 1000 with 9 institutions, the Czech Republic 6, Hungary 4, and Serbia 2 educational institutions, while The list also made one university each from Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

According to the Babeș-Bolyai University announcement, Romania has been removed from the ARWU ranking as a result of “mistakes and extreme indecision in national academic policy”. “We commend the communist reform in the higher education system established in 1948. If we had corrected it in time, Romania would have at least three universities in the ranking today,” said Daniel David, BBTE Rector. According to his own admission, no university was supported. Cluj at all to stay in this world ranking.
