I wish What the hell is “airplane mode”?

Almost every gadget has the function, but few people know exactly why.

13.07.2023 – Almost every tablet, laptop and mobile phone has an “Airplane” mode, and sometimes even a “Flight” mode, but very few people know exactly what purpose it serves. Does the device fly away from him? Maybe the plane we are traveling on will crash if we forget to turn it on? But really, what is this functionality and why do manufacturers feel it is important to include it in almost every smart device?

The short answer is that airlines for a long time simply banned the use of devices capable of transmitting radio signals while traveling. And everyone had to follow this rule, otherwise the rebels could be excluded from the trip.

The slightly longer explanation is that the above devices emit radio waves and electromagnetic interference (EMI) that can interfere with the operation of aircraft communications equipment. Although there is little chance of this happening, the airlines decided not to take a risk on the basis of certainty. Furthermore, the US Federal Aviation Administration has also measured that mobile signals coming from aircraft can overload the mobile towers below them as they pass by, which can also cause outages in services.

These strict regulations were then relaxed over time, nowadays, for example, it is now possible to access the Internet via WiFi on many aircraft, and many airlines now allow the use of Bluetooth devices and accessories – except during takeoff and landing.

But what exactly does this feature do?

Based on the above, you can already guess, but you can easily find out with one swipe that the mode immediately disables all wireless connections. In other words, there is no WiFi, mobile internet, or Bluetooth in Airplane mode, and even phone calls and messages are completely out of order. However, the good news is that besides mitigation, this function has also improved: for example, if we turn it on when a Bluetooth headset / earphone is connected, this connection is no longer broken, and we can still listen to music, watch a movie, etc. .

However, the mod can be very useful outside of airplanes. For example, if the phone’s battery level is too low, when the function is turned on, we can extend the operating time a little. We’ll still be able to take pictures and videos, and if we need the internet for some reason, we’ll turn it off until we’re done with our work.

And in the case of charging: when the airplane mode is on, the mobile phone is charged faster. The reason is actually the same as above: a lot of the power-hungry stuff is disabled, so charging can be completed sooner than if we plugged it in at 220.

But there is also a convenient benefit: if, for example, you have to study for an exam / paper, or you don’t want anything to distract you from work, just click on the airplane icon on your mobile phone, and no one and nothing will disturb you. We will not receive a single notification, beep, call or vibration.

So no, the plane won’t automatically crash if you don’t turn it on, but if the flight attendants warn you about it, you should definitely switch to the mode so you can use the plane’s WiFi.
