Archaeologists said that the city called Sheol was built in the style of Maya Pok architecture, which is common in the Yucatan Peninsula but rare in the Mérida region. Carlos Peraza, one of the leaders of the excavations, said there may have been more than 4,000 people living in the city, which we estimate could have lived between 600 and 900.
Peraza said that people of different social classes lived in the city, such as priests and clerks who lived in magnificent palaces and commoners who lived in small buildings.
A cemetery for adults and children was found next to the city, where the dead were buried along with obsidian and flint tools, sacrificial gifts and personal belongings, MTI wrote.
Traces of marine life were also discovered, indicating that the Cheol people also supplemented their farm-based diet with fish caught from the nearby sea.
The ancient city was discovered after the construction of the industrial area began. Despite the unexpected discovery, the investment will be carried out, but the archaeological finds will be preserved.
Archaeologists were surprised to find the former Mayan city in such good condition. Due to the rapid growth of cities, many archaeological sites in the area are being destroyed.
