Virginia has given the green light to Dominion Energy’s 2.6 GW offshore wind project. This could build the largest offshore wind farm planned in the United States.
The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project developed by Dominion Energy, which is currently the largest planned wind farm project in the United States, has received the necessary state permit, reports g captain.
The CVOW will have a capacity of 2.6 GW and consist of 176 wind turbines. It will be built 43.5 kilometers off the coast of Virginia Beach. From 2026, the project will be able to produce the energy needed to supply up to 660,000 families.
CVOW will be built with an investment of approximately $9.8 billion and is expected to save Virginia consumers more than $3 billion in its first 10 years of operation.
At the same time, the relevant government authority has approved the construction of more than 23 kilometers of new transmission lines and other onshore infrastructure, which are essential to supply power to homes and businesses in the state.
CVOW’s first phase has been in operation since 2020 and consists of two test turbines producing 12 megawatts of power.
