37-year-old Ted Jan Plomin took his second gold medal of the competition by winning the 10,000 metres.
CALGARY, Alberta – Four different athletes – Evanie Blondin, Connor Howe, Isabelle Weidman and Ted Jan Plomin – reached the top of the podium on Friday at the 2023 Canadian Long Track Championships presented by Intact Insurance in Calgary.
The second race day opened with the first women’s 1000m race of the weekend. Evanie Blondin (Ottawa, ON) had a winning time of 1:15.62, her second medal of the competition after taking bronze in the women’s 3,000 meters yesterday. Madison Berman (Ponoka, Alta.) took silver with a time of 1:16.43, while Carolina Hiller (Prince George’s, B.C.) clocked a personal best of 1:16.68, making her second podium finish this week after. Winning the gold medal in the 500 meters yesterday.
Connor Howe (Canmore, Alta.) was crowned men’s 1,000-meter champion. The 23-year-old, who won silver in the men’s 5,000m yesterday, bested 28 other skaters in the event. Laurent Dubroy (Levis, Que.) continued his medal streak by claiming silver with a time of 1:08.08, one day after winning gold in the 500 meters. Three-time Olympian and athlete Vincent DeHayter (Cumberland, Ont.) finished third with a time of 1:08.31.
Isabelle Weidmann (Ottawa, ON) claimed victory in the women’s 5,000 metres, crossing the finish line in a time of 6:56.28. This is the second medal of the competition for Weidman, who won the silver medal in the women’s 3,000 meters yesterday. Valerie Maltese (Chicoutimi, Que.), the Canadian champion in the women’s 3,000 metres, skied to a silver medal with a personal best time of 6:58.77. Evanie Blondin (Ottawa, ON) added to her medal collection, finishing with a time of 7:04.65 to claim bronze.
Ted Jan Plomin (Calgary, Alta.) won his second consecutive Canadian championship title, adding to his 5,000-meter win by finishing the men’s 10,000-meter race in 13:06.95. Graeme Fish (Moose Jaw, Sask.) also raced for his second medal, taking silver with a time of 13:13.39. After narrowly missing out on the podium in the 5,000m yesterday, Jordan Belkus (Markham, Ont.) took 10,000m bronze with a time of 13:19.10.
Day three of the 2023 Canadian Long Track Championships presented by Intact Insurance will feature Group 2 of the men’s and women’s 500 metres, as well as the men’s and women’s 1,500 metres. The races will be broadcast live starting at 10:00 a.m. MT on Speed Skating Canada’s Youtube channel, as well as on CBC Sports Digital platforms.
