Poland has pledged to cut off Russian oil completely by the end of this year, so there are only a few weeks left until Poland has to completely stop buying oil from Russia, and the government in Warsaw is pressing for EU action to help keep that going. pledge.
In May this year, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki promised to cut off oil imports from Russia through the northern section of the Friendship pipeline by the end of the year, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a similar commitment. The plan was that after the Polish and German declarations, only the countries using the southern section of the Friendship pipeline, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, would continue to buy Russian crude oil.
Poland is now pushing for sanctions against the northern part of the pipeline, creating legal grounds for Warsaw to terminate existing contracts with Russia,
and a tariff system for those who continue to access relatively cheap Russian crude through the southern section of the Friendship pipeline.
In our opinion, the introduction of additional sanctions, including the northern part of the Friendship pipeline, requires appropriate regulation at the EU level, and Poland is cooperating with Germany on this issue.
