New Zealand’s prime minister quickly made it clear that the act had nothing to do with Harry and Meghan.

On Monday, Netflix announced that after Harry and Meghan, the American couple will be directing a new series, but this time it will not be about their lives.

Although the couple only appear as executive producers on the production, Ardern’s office released a statement in response to questions from reporters, clarifying that her involvement had nothing to do with the royal couple.

As reported, in early March 2019, the Prime Minister was approached by the Mandela Foundation to participate in a project to develop accessible resources on key leadership qualities based on a one-hour interview. By the way, the series is aimed at young, up-and-coming leaders.

Ardern was originally told that the interview would be included in books, short films, and audiobooks.

According to the statement, in March 2021, the Nelson Mandela Foundation informed the New Zealand Prime Minister’s office that they had reached an agreement with Netflix to broadcast the interview series, including a 2019 interview with the prime minister.

The Prime Minister’s Office was notified in May this year that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would be presenting the series; noting that this was almost two and a half years after the interview was recorded and that the Mandela Foundation had already given permission for its use. They added that all contact was with the Foundation (there was no Discussion about the project with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex).

By the way, there is a budding friendship between Meghan Markle and Jacinda Ardern, which developed during their 2018 royal tour of New Zealand. Meghan was pregnant at the time of the tour, and Ardern later spoke of how impressed she was with the princess’ flexibility.
