Nexus Mods Introduces New AI Disclosure Rules but Rejects Complete Ban on AI-Generated Mods

Nexus Mods has announced new restrictions on the use of generative artificial intelligence in game modifications, requiring creators to disclose how AI tools were used in their work. Despite growing criticism from parts of the gaming community, the popular modding platform has confirmed that it will not impose a complete ban on AI-generated mods.

The updated policy aims to increase transparency, protect human creativity, and give players greater control over the content they download.

Nexus Mods Announces Mandatory AI Disclosure Requirements

The new guidelines, outlined in an official blog post published on November 3, 2026, follow ongoing discussions about the growing role of generative AI in video game modding.

Under the revised rules, mod creators must publicly explain whether artificial intelligence was involved in developing their modifications and identify the specific elements created or assisted by AI tools.

The platform says these disclosures will help users make informed decisions before downloading mods.

Existing creators will receive a 60-day grace period to update their mod listings and comply with the new requirements.

Nexus Mods will enforce the policy through manual moderation. Community members are also encouraged to report modifications they believe contain undisclosed AI-generated material.

Platform Emphasizes Human Creativity While Allowing AI Tools

Nexus Mods owner Foledinho emphasized that supporting human creativity remains central to the platform’s approach.

“We are pro-human creativity. That’s the basic premise behind all decisions below,” Foledinho wrote in the announcement.

However, the company acknowledged that AI technology can be used in different ways throughout the mod development process, making a universal prohibition difficult to justify.

“AI-generated mods are welcome on our platform provided that they meet certain criteria regarding permissions, transparency, presentation, and conduct,” Foledinho explained.

The policy therefore distinguishes between different applications of artificial intelligence rather than treating every AI-assisted modification as equivalent.

New AI Tags and Filtering Options Give Players More Control

One of the most significant changes involves expanded transparency requirements and improved content filtering.

Mod authors must provide a “public explanation” describing how and where generative AI was used during development.

Nexus Mods already supports tags identifying AI involvement, including modifications created primarily through AI-assisted coding and those containing only a limited number of AI-generated assets.

Under the updated system, users will have greater control over which types of AI-related modifications appear on the platform’s homepage.

Players Can Filter AI-Generated Mod Content

The expanded filtering tools are intended to address complaints from users who prefer modifications created entirely through traditional development methods.

Players who want to avoid AI-generated content will be able to filter certain categories of modifications, while those comfortable with AI-assisted development can continue discovering and downloading them.

The approach is designed to accommodate different preferences without removing AI-generated mods from the platform altogether.

Gaming Community Divided Over Generative AI Policies

The announcement has prompted mixed reactions among Nexus Mods users, highlighting the broader debate surrounding artificial intelligence in game development.

Some community members argue that AI-generated modifications should be banned entirely, particularly because AI-created thumbnails and other visual assets can make it difficult to identify traditionally produced content.

Others maintain that generative AI tools have made modding more accessible, especially for creators with limited programming experience.

AI-assisted coding, for example, can help individuals develop modifications without requiring extensive technical knowledge.

Supporters of these tools argue that stricter restrictions could discourage newcomers and limit experimentation within the modding community.

Critics, meanwhile, remain concerned about the potential effects of AI-generated content on originality, artistic work, and the visibility of human-created modifications.

Nexus Mods Says AI Policies Will Continue to Evolve

Foledinho acknowledged that the new rules are unlikely to satisfy everyone and emphasized that the platform will continue reviewing its approach as AI technology develops.

“As I said before, this is a complicated subject, and I don’t expect everyone to agree with every decision we’ve made, or will make in the future,” Foledinho said.

The platform owner also stressed that discussions about artificial intelligence cannot be resolved through a single policy update.

“This is definitely not a conversation we’re going to have once and consider it done. AI is constantly developing, and the way it’s used in modding will also keep changing, and because of that, our policies will need to evolve alongside it.”

Nexus Mods reiterated that its primary mission remains supporting creators and providing a platform where they can share their work.

Nexus Mods Seeks Balance Between AI Innovation and Creator Rights

The revised guidelines represent an effort to balance technological developments with the expectations of a community built around user-generated gaming content.

By requiring AI disclosures, strengthening moderation, and expanding filtering options, Nexus Mods hopes to give players greater transparency while preserving opportunities for creators who use emerging development tools.

Although the debate over generative AI in gaming is far from settled, the platform’s decision establishes a framework that prioritizes disclosure and user choice over an outright ban.
