IKEA and Xbox have teamed up on YXSTABY, a new nine-piece collection designed to bring gaming-inspired furniture and accessories into everyday living spaces. The collection became available in IKEA stores worldwide starting October 1, with online availability expected later in the year depending on the market.
IKEA and Xbox Bring Gaming Design Into Everyday Spaces
The YXSTABY collection was jointly developed by IKEA and Xbox, with designers from both companies collaborating on each piece. The goal was to combine gaming-inspired design with comfort, practical storage and functionality suited to modern homes.
Rather than creating furniture exclusively for dedicated gaming rooms, the collaboration focuses on pieces intended to work in living rooms and other shared spaces.
“At IKEA, we believe gaming deserves a place in the home that feels just as thoughtful, comfortable and personal as any other everyday activity,” said Philip Dilé, Product Developer at IKEA. “With YXSTABY, we worked closely with XBOX to reimagine familiar forms into playful, functional pieces that make it easier for people to bring their love of gaming into the spaces where they live.”
Xbox Controller Inspires the YXSTABY Collection
The Xbox controller serves as a recurring design influence throughout the collection. Several familiar controller elements have been transformed into household furniture and accessories.
D-Pad Becomes Cushion and Decorative Platter
The controller’s recognizable directional pad, or D-pad, has been adapted into two products: a comfortable cushion and a decorative platter made from shiny stainless steel.
Another piece, a mirrored display box, is designed to showcase a gaming controller from multiple angles while also providing space for figurines and other collectibles.
The collection also includes a gaming lounge chair, monitor stand, TV stand on casters, side table on casters and a laptop support with storage and accessories.
Together, the products reflect the growing overlap between gaming setups and broader home design, particularly as consoles, PCs and gaming accessories increasingly occupy multipurpose living spaces.
Thumbstick Stool Uses Original Xbox Design Files
One of the collection’s most distinctive products is the thumbstick stool, which takes its inspiration directly from the Xbox Wireless Controller.
The stool was developed using the controller’s original 3D design files supplied by Xbox device designers. The concept transforms the thumbstick — normally operated with a player’s thumb — into a piece of furniture designed for sitting.
Even the controller’s grip texture has been reinterpreted. On the stool, the textured surface is intended to help keep a person securely positioned, similar to the way the original texture helps prevent a player’s thumb from slipping during gameplay.
“We started with the Xbox controller—one of the most recognizable objects in gaming—and looked at how its familiar forms could inspire the collection,” said Carl Ledbetter, Head of Design, XBOX Devices. “By translating elements like the D-pad and thumbstick into functional furniture, we created pieces that celebrate Xbox design while feeling completely at home in everyday living spaces.”
Gaming Furniture Designed Beyond Dedicated Game Rooms
The collaboration reflects a broader approach to gaming furniture that moves beyond traditional gaming chairs and desks. YXSTABY instead incorporates recognizable gaming elements into products that can function as conventional home furnishings.
By adapting the Xbox controller’s design language into stools, cushions, tables and storage products, IKEA and Xbox are positioning the collection for consumers who want their interest in gaming represented without turning an entire room into a dedicated gaming setup.
YXSTABY Availability Begins at IKEA Stores
The YXSTABY collection launched in IKEA stores on October 1, with availability varying by market. Online sales are scheduled to begin later this year.
With nine products spanning seating, storage, display and accessories, the IKEA and Xbox collaboration brings familiar gaming design into household furniture while emphasizing comfort and everyday functionality.
