China and the United States in the conflict of the observatory in Chile

Santiago / Munich (IT Boltwise) – tensions between China and the United States of America are increasing, where Beijing interacts with Washington’s concerns about a planned observatory in Chile.

The recent developments related to the Chinese Observatory planned in the Atacama desert in Chile have exacerbated geopolitical tensions between China and the United States of America. China’s reaction to sharp criticism of American concerns that the project sees was part of a greater strategy to expand the Chinese influence in South America. The Chinese ambassador to Chile, New Qingu, accused the United States of choosing Chile’s free right to choose freely and undermine and spread the information.

The planned observatory, which arises from the cooperation between the Chinese National Astronomical Observatory and the Catholic University in the north in Chile, should be able to monitor things such as asteroids and comets close to Earth. But the project soon entered the cycle of competition between China and the Trump administration. Washington sees the increasing impact of China in Latin America with anxiety, especially since Beijing is investing in infrastructure, agriculture, energy and mining and replaced the United States as the largest commercial partner in the region.

During his session in the Senate, Brandon Jude, Trump’s candidate, expressed the position of US ambassador to Chile, his concern about China’s growing influence in one of the richest and most stable countries in Latin America. He stressed that the United States is the best trade partner and that he will try to persuade Chile as an ambassador. Jude emphasized that the United States of America in regions such as Antarctica, fishing and marine conservation are the best partners.

In response to the growing concerns, the Chilean government initially developed suspension of the project to verify this. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the project should still be clarified. Despite the Chinese insurance that the observatory does not follow military purposes, US officials fear that these institutions can increase China’s skills to obtain information.

The Chinese ambassador rejected these concerns and stressed that China had no interest in political geography. The Chilean government was asked to eliminate the intervention of the United States and agree to the project. The Chilean government is now facing the challenge of maintaining a balance between the great powers while maintaining its interests at the same time.

Chile is an important site for astronomical research because of its geographical location. The high dry atacama desert provides perfect conditions for observing the sky. In addition to China and the United States, the European Union and Australia also run correspondents in the region, which confirms the importance of Chile as a global center of astronomy.
