The United States announced on Tuesday that it had approved the sale of aircraft missiles of $ 1.33 billion (1.17 billion euros) to Poland. The package includes 400 AIM-1220D Air-Air missiles.
In addition, Warsaw control system groups, spare parts, shipping containers are required and access to the American program required to operate the missiles.
The US State Department agreed to a possible sale, and the US Defense Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said it had provided the necessary messages for the approval of more Congress.
“The planned sale will improve Polaen’s ability to face the current and future threats from the air defense to protect the Polish and vital forces in moving or fighting and improving Poland’s contribution significantly to NATO’s requirements,” DSCA said in a statement.
Washington says that the sale is in line with the goals of its foreign policy, to ensure its allies, especially those in NATO, as “a driving force for political and economic stability in Europe.”
The sale is at a time when Warsaw wants to achieve its goals to increase defense spending by next year to 5 percent of GDP-central demand from US President Donald Trump to NATO members.
Trump routinely criticized Europe that it is not very important to defend it and that army and defense expenditures are low. Washington has also accused the Tala’s long allies of passing the United States of America because of their security through NATO “Piggyback”.
Last week, Estonia, a member of NATO, announced the introduction of additional defensive spending for several billion euros. With the new draft law, the Baltic land will reach the threshold that Trump requires, so that the country adjacent to Russia spends about 5.4 % of the gross domestic product of defense.
Poland says it is determined to increase military investments in order to better prepare for potential threats after the great invasion of Russia in Ukraine in February 2022.
