The hit documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, which chronicles the transformation of north Wales football club Wrexham AFC under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has been renewed for a further three seasons.
The announcement means the Emmy-winning series will continue until at least 2029, taking the programme to a total of eight seasons.
Ryan Reynolds Confirms Major Renewal for Welcome to Wrexham
Reynolds shared the news with his followers on Instagram on Friday, confirming that season five of the series will premiere on 14 May.
In his post, the actor said: “Welcome To Wrexham’s incredible season five premieres May 14 and we’ve been renewed for three more.
“Congrats to our Emmy-winning doc team, the town, and Wrexham AFC for always making things so dramatic and stressy. Good for TV, bad for blood pressure.”
The renewal marks the first time the documentary has been commissioned for multiple seasons at once, underlining its success with audiences in the UK and internationally.
How Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Transformed Wrexham AFC
The series has followed Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney since they purchased Wrexham AFC for £2 million in February 2021.
At the time of the takeover, the club was competing in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. Since then, Wrexham have secured a rapid rise through the football pyramid and now play in the Championship, one division below the Premier League.
Their ownership has brought significant international attention to the club and wider town, with the documentary helping to raise Wrexham’s global profile well beyond traditional football audiences.
Wrexham’s Promotion Push Adds Further Drama
The club’s on-pitch progress continues to provide compelling material for the series.
Wrexham are currently just outside the Championship play-off positions. A top-six finish would secure a place in the promotion play-offs and offer the club a chance to compete for promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season.
With the team continuing its rapid ascent and the documentary now secured for several more years, Welcome to Wrexham appears set to remain a prominent fixture in sports entertainment.
Continued Success for Club and Documentary
The latest renewal reflects the programme’s strong performance and the sustained interest in Wrexham’s unlikely rise under celebrity ownership.
As both the club and the series continue to grow, supporters will be watching closely to see whether the next chapter includes an even more remarkable step: a place in the Premier League.
