Hamad International Airport confirmed that a new baby was found at the airport on October 2, adding that medical professionals are concerned “about the health and well-being of the mother who has just given birth and has requested her location before leaving (the airport).”
The airport said in a statement to CNN: “Individuals who were able to reach the designated area of the airport in which the newborn was found were asked to assist in the inquiry.”
Airport authorities are still searching for the mother, but the newborn is “safe under the professional care of medical and social workers.”
Speaking on Monday, Australian Foreign Minister Marisa Payne said that “I have not heard anything about it happening in my life in any context.”
“This is a scandalous and extremely worrying attack in relation to a range of events … We have made our views clear to the Qatari authorities on this,” she told a news conference in Canberra.
Payne added that a report has been submitted to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
In response to CNN, AFP said it was aware of the matter and was communicating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
“It would not be appropriate to comment any further,” an AFP spokesman said.
