According to the 1997 Formula 1 World Championship, there is no doubt that the Monaco Ferrari driver is extremely fast, yet he still makes minor mistakes several times, and it is questionable whether this will fit into the World Cup battle.
For Charles Leclerc, the 2022 Formula 1 season got off to a great start, taking two wins and finishing second in the first three races. But since then, his luck has turned: he threw the podium at Imola, a technical failure in Barcelona and Baku deprived him of first place, and in Monaco, Ferrari spoiled the strategy terribly. As a result, Monaco was 49 points behind Max Verstappen.
Far from the end of the season, of course, Jacques Villeneuve was not yet sure if Leclerc had everything else he needed to be world champion in addition to speed:
“She’s amazingly fast, but still makes some little mistakes that she shouldn’t,” the 1997 World Cup winner said on the F1 Nation podcast. “Imola, for example, was there, and then he didn’t really help the team either. Right now we know he’s fast and aggressive, but is he also the world champion? Is he like Max? How are you under pressure when a World Cup title is on the line? This is what we still need to know.”
Villeneuve was not happy either, with Leclerc finishing fifth from the end of the grid at last Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix: “If you’re sitting in a Ferrari, there can be a Red Bull in front of you at most. Penalties were imposed before the race because they thought it was He would finish fourth in a worst-case scenario without losing Montreal and Perez, but that wasn’t the case.”
