According to the announcement, those affected by the sanctions are members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps responsible for cyber attacks against the United States and other infrastructure and ransomware distribution.

The statement from the Treasury said that government actions have been taken against a group operating in Iran and carrying out malicious hacking activities, which has hampered the functioning of the infrastructure of the United States and other countries since at least 2020.

The sanctions were the result of a joint effort by the US Departments of State, Justice and Treasury, the FBI, US Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM), the National Security Agency, and the Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency.

The State Department also indicated in a statement that three people were involved in the bounty offered for information on malicious hacking activities. Under the bounty program, the State Department offers up to $10 million to anyone who provides information that helps locate or locate an individual engaged in cyber activity against critical infrastructure of the United States.

According to US Treasury data, ransoms paid in the US due to ransomware exceeded $590 million last year, up from $416 million the previous year.
