Nutmeg is the seed of a tropical plant used as a spice and medicinal herb. The nutmeg tree itself is native to Malaysia, but is also grown in Indonesia, the West Indies, and Brazil.
The nutmeg tree can grow up to a height of 15-20 meters, and it is an evergreen plant. It gives its first fruits at the age of 7 years, and its fruits continue for about a century. The yellow fruits, 8 to 10 centimeters long, contain the seeds, i.e. nutmeg, which are surrounded by a red layer of seeds.
It is ground in house and also available in whole form. If we buy it last, we'll need a kitchen grater. It is very hard, so it would be completely impossible to eat, and it is dangerous.
However, why does it work as a medicine? Are these spices expensive if we consume a lot of them? We answer it all in our gallery!
Its special, slightly spicy taste goes well with dairy products and cakes, and it's available in both ground and fresh forms, and nothing beats the scent of freshly grated nutmeg. One pinch of it is usually enough to feel the taste, but you should not overdo it for other reasons as well.
