A new bill has been passed in Montana, and the governor will almost certainly sign it.
Montana has become the first US state to pass legislation banning the use of TikTok on personal devices, according to reports. BBC. The law is still a draft, and the governor of Montana must sign it for it to go into effect.
Actions against the Chinese social networking site have been under consideration in the US and other countries for some time, and we recently presented the situation in a comprehensive article. TikTok, which belongs to China’s ByteDance, has been repeatedly accused of posing a national security risk through the data it collects on users.
It is possible, if accepted, that ByteDance could defy the law through legal means.
SB 419 passed 54-43, citing several concerns with TikTok, including alleged surveillance by the Chinese government and the app’s impact on young people. According to the law, TikTok will not be available on app stores in the future, but the use of the app will not be prohibited for those who have already downloaded it.
Violation of the regulations can result in a fine of up to $10,000 (about 3.3 million HUF), and penalties do not apply to individual users, but to companies. Since Gianforte, a Republican, has previously banned government employees from using the app, it is assumed he will sign the law.
