The United States returned the first immigrants to Mexico

The United States and Mexico agreed last week to relaunch the Migrant Protection Program (MPP), officially named, which obliges asylum seekers to remain in Mexico for the duration of their asylum application. Nevertheless, the Mexican leadership has made certain demands, including urging Washington to vaccinate returnees against the coronavirus and exempting particularly vulnerable asylum seekers from the regulation.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the first two migrants were turned back through the Ciudad Juárez border crossing in Mexico, opposite El Paso, Texas. The Intergovernmental Organization for Migration also called for the disputed MPP to be ended as soon as possible, calling the program inhumane and contrary to international law.

One of the returning migrants, Enrique Manzanares from Nicaragua, said he was sad but thanked God that he was still alive. After all, nothing was lost. Some succeed, some fail, Manzanares told Reuters news agency.

Democrat Biden faced serious opposition to changing his predecessor’s strict immigration policy while the number of blocked southern border crossings reached a historic record.

The US Supreme Court ordered Bident in late August to reactivate the immigration program of its predecessor, Trump. The majority conservative judiciary found that the Biden government violated federal laws when it scrapped the immigrant protection program in February.

After the MPP was fully operational, the relays took place at seven border crossing points (San Diego, Calexico, Nogales, El Paso, Eagle Pass, Laredo, Brownsville) It will be implemented in accordance with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Mexico faces significant challenges due to recent deportations, says Michael Hernandez, a migration expert at Mexico’s COLEF think-tank, with reception centers in the north of the country being overcrowded and unable to handle the influx of Central American migrants from the south.

This is a failure of the immigration policy between Mexico and the United States. At the same time, Trump’s influence in the US Congress and courts shows that he can deliver on Biden’s promises.

Hernandez confirmed.
