After a meeting with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto in Helsinki, Mitch McConnell said the United States might agree to the country joining the Western Military Alliance before August.
Of course, we hope that before the August recess, when Congress does not meet normally, we will be able to arrive
He told reporters.
This came after Finnish President Niinisto confirmed on Sunday that Finland is applying for NATO membership, a historic political shift.
McConnell said Finnish membership enjoys broad bipartisan support among US lawmakers.
McConnell emphasized the Republicans’ commitment to strengthening the United States’ participation in the military alliance – and hinted that Donald Trump’s view that the United States should withdraw from NATO is unpopular in the party.
Certainly not this majority in the Republican Party, and certainly not this majority view among Senate Republicans or House Republicans
McConnell confirmed.
