The US Mega Millions jackpot reached $1.1 billion (389 billion forints) by Tuesday evening, making it one of the highest lottery jackpots ever.

According to local time, Tuesday evening’s lottery has not yet revealed whether there will be a winning ticket, but the amount available has already become the sixth largest lottery prize ever. The highest jackpot ever was won in the US Powerball lottery last November, when the lucky gambler took home $2.04 billion (722 billion Hungarian forints).

The Mega Millions lottery, which is played in 44 states, has been racking up jackpots since April.

The winning lottery winner will only get the full amount if they are willing to withdraw it in installments over 30 years. In the event of immediate acceptance, he would be entitled to $550 million, and almost half of that amount would go to taxes.

Launched in 2002, the Mega Millions system has been constantly modified over the years to make winning even more difficult. The odds of winning the jackpot are currently 1 in 300 million.
