European Parliament spokesperson Jaume Deuch told Twitter on Thursday that the European Parliament will try the European Union Court in Luxembourg for failing to enforce reciprocity obligations between the European Union and the United States.
The European Commission has not fully implemented reciprocity obligations after years of negotiations, as Washington still does not allow citizens of Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Cyprus to travel without visas for a short period of time for tourism purposes, the spokesman explained why the procedure was started. ..
Even in a resolution adopted at its plenary session in December, the European Parliament repeated its call for the European Union Commission to temporarily suspend visa waiver for citizens of countries, in this case the United States, if they did not raise the visa requirement for citizens of some EU member states.
In the event of non-compliance with visa reciprocity obligations, the European Commission has 24 months to establish a legal basis for the possible temporary suspension of visa reciprocity for a maximum period of 12 months. Since the European Commission did not comply with its reciprocity obligations within the stipulated deadline, the European Parliament intends to enforce the obligation in full in the European Court of Justice. A spokesperson for the European Parliament added that the deadline for the work of the European Union Commission expired in April 2016.
