Texas Southern University & Prairie View A&M University Homecomings The Same Weekend

The NFL season is over, after the Philadelphia Eagles miraculously beat the New England Patriots. Now it’s time for college football which means homecoming for historically black colleges and universities. Most HBCUs have released their 2018 football schedule with a few changes like fewer games and for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) no championship title game. HBCU Gameday says instead “the SWAC football championship title will go to the team with the best regular-season conference record.” The News Star reported that “part of the growing concern was finances” and travel time. Finances are understandable, but for current players like Marquis Warford, Alcorn State’s wide receiver, expressed in a tweet that “As a competitor I don’t want nothing handed to me. I want to compete and show people who the best is. This right here is crazy!”

As for the two Texas SWAC member schools, Texas Southern University (TSU) and Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU or PV), the fans, alumni, and students are not feeling the new football schedule. Especially since there is no Labor Day Classic game which usually kicks off the first game of the school year. Last year, there was no Labor Day Classic due to effects of Hurricane Harvey that hit Texas and caused major damage. The Labor Day game was moved to the weekend of Thanksgiving and I guess they have decided to play again the same weekend this year. Again, that makes it hard for some fans to attend because the Bayou Classic featuring Southern University and Grambling State University happens Thanksgiving weekend as well in New Orleans.

Now the homecoming games for TSU and PVAMU will occurred on the same day, October 27th. Some people argue that this move could potentially be bad for the local communities surrounding both schools. TSU is located in Houston, Texas while PVAMU is in Prairie View, Texas approximately 60 miles apart. Usually students from both universities visit each other’s homecoming since its down the street.

Now with the homecomings happening on the same day, this could lead to higher prices for hotels, increase prices for parties, and potential incidents that may happened with the inflation of people on road commuting back and forth. Some alums say if it worked before then there shouldn’t be any problems with this homecoming year. Others stick to the school rivalry by not caring if the homecomings are on the same day because TSU Tigers will be on “The Yard” and PV Panthers will be on “The Hill.” Either way, we all hope this will be a safe, but fun homecoming season. Who knows? Maybe something positive will come out of this decision.

Texas Southern University homecoming game will be against Mississippi Valley State at the BBVA Compass Stadium and Prairie View A&M University homecoming game will be against Alcorn State at Panther Stadium.

Go Tigers! Go Panthers! #HBCULove
