Scientists were also impressed by the latest space telescope discovery, which was thought impossible

The James Webb Space Telescope appears to have lived up to expectations. He has already captured images that challenge our previous understanding of the universe. The recent discoveries have a good opportunity to rewrite the rules we’ve established so far, because they go against everything we’ve believed so far.

The James Webb Space Telescope is currently the most important NASA astrophysics project. It has such sensitive instruments that it can observe the most distant and therefore the oldest objects in the universe. Light from the farthest point in space now reaches only the Earth. This means that the more we look into the starry sky, the further into the universe’s past we can see.

Impossible discovery

the Swinburne University of Technology Even in the first images from the James Webb Space Telescope, something was caught that shouldn’t have happened. Hidden in the many lights are small red spots of only a few pixels. To the average person, this may not mean much, but these red spots can turn the early state of the universe upside down. The special feature of the James Webb Space Telescope is that it also specializes in detecting infrared light, so it can also detect the light of distant and fainter stars and galaxies than previous space telescopes.

The red spot in the images is of the utmost importance because most galaxies at this distance are dish-shaped rather than round. That alone doesn’t mean much, but when the researchers ran the analysis, they realized that the red dot is a galaxy whose existence had hitherto seemed impossible. Based on the analysis, the observed galaxy is about 13.1 billion light-years away, while containing about one hundred billion stars. These sizes seemed impossible for such early galaxies.

According to our current knowledge, the Big Bang occurred about 13.8 billion years ago. In other words, this galaxy was created only 700 million years after the birth of the universe. In addition to these characteristics, this galaxy, according to the researchers:

“Impossibly early, impossibly big.”

The missing link

In the era of the Hubble Space Telescope, it was not possible to see this far. Because of this, many early galaxies appeared seemingly out of nowhere, but there was no information about their origin. These early galaxies are particularly interesting. They have at least as many stars as the Milky Way, but at the same time their dimensions are thirty times smaller.

At this age it is a problem, according to our knowledge so far, that there was not enough gas in space from which many stars could form. For these galaxies to form so quickly, it would have required all of the gases in the universe and star formation to be 100% of this matter. This is impossible according to our current knowledge.

These galaxies are probably special cases in the top 1%. At the same time, if the results are confirmed and the existence of such a galaxy becomes certain, the previously known galaxy formation model will be inverted. However, we will have to wait at least another year for the answer and the exact result of the investigation.
