Russia supplies India with missiles, and Turkey wants to buy Russian missiles

Sugayev says India will receive the first regiment by the end of the year. Alexander Mikheev, head of Rosoborone Export, a state-owned arms exporter, told Interfax on July 20 that the first batch of S-400s destined for India was in the final stages of production.

In early October 2018, it was officially announced the signing of a contract for the sale of the Sz-400 Triumph air defense systems as part of the negotiations accompanying the Russia-India summit. Under a $5.43 billion contract, India will receive five S-400 regiments. The entire system is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024.

Sugayev also reported that Moscow is in talks with Ankara on its supply of Russian military equipment and the development of joint weapons, but did not specifically answer a question about when to sign a contract for the delivery of another batch of S-400s. However, he said, “Many countries in the region have shown interest in the S-400 Triumph System” at the Dubai fair.

Mikheev said in August that another Russian-Turkish deal on the S-400 systems could be reached later this year. In September, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed his intention to buy, in a statement to CBS TV. According to official sources, part of the contract, which may be part of the production, will move to Turkey.

Turkey bought four regiments for $2.5 billion a few years ago. According to the announcement of Rosoborone’s exports on October 23, 2019, Russia delivered it to Turkey ahead of schedule. On December 7, 2020, Sergey Chemezov, head of the state-owned Rostyeh, which exports high technology, said that Turkey had paid for the order.

According to official sources, Moscow has offered Turkey, among other things, the purchase of fourth-generation Su-35 combat aircraft.

The United States has repeatedly expressed concern about the Turkish purchase of S-400s,

Because it fears Russia will use the systems to gather information about the fifth generation of F-35 fighter-bombers. Washington also excluded Ankara from its industrialization programme.

In addition, the Pentagon said that Turkey would have to return the S-400s to Russia if it wanted to purchase US Patriot missile systems. The Sz-400 Triumph air defense system, developed and manufactured by the Almaz-Antej group, is used to defeat military and tactical aircraft, ballistic missiles, hypersonic targets and other air strikes by electronic and other means. The system is capable of destroying aerodynamic targets at a range of up to 400 km, and ballistic targets flying at speeds of up to 4.8 km per second at altitudes from a few meters to tens of kilometers, and at a range of up to 60 km.

Defense Minister Sergei Soigo announced on Tuesday that Russia will create a new air defense system. It did not disclose the features of the Sz-550. Referring to open sources, Interfax writes that the Sz-550 short-range missile defense system was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The project was stopped, among other things, after the 1986 meeting between Soviet and American President Ronald Reagan and American President Mikhail Gorbachev, and some sources destroyed the prototype in 1992.
